Table of Contents 1. Quests 2. Missions3. Random Encounters Reminder: Pages refer to what is typed in a word processing program, not pages of the thread.
Quests
Personal quests that players may perform without the restrictions or risks that missions have. Aside from driving individual plots, quests are used to earn XP, items, learn techniques, and regain lost Health and Sanity. A helpful guide for reward requirements: - 10xp is earned per page based on quality. Maximum of 100 xp.
- Item requirements are dependent on their Tier.
- Every level earns you access to a new Technique. They require 1-5 pages to add to your character, depending on the power of the technique.
- It costs 50xp to restore 1 point of Sanity. That’s 5 pages. This is only rewarded when starting the quest after completing a mission.
- It costs 30xp to restore 1 point of Health. That’s 3 pages. This is only rewarded when starting the quest after completing a mission.

Missions
Special tasks that include Random Encounters. They provide XP, Items, Gold, Supplies, Secrets. Some even provide new areas to explore or new monsters discovered upon completion. Just a bevy of rewards. However, missions are incredibly dangerous at times, ranging from simple Scouting Missions to Monster Exterminations. Missions have modifiers that effect the mission but can be offset by traits, skills, or items. Each Mission Level has a Checkpoint. That's when the Random Encounter is rolled for.
A character is restricted to one mission at a time and must complete/fail their mission before they can move on to the next.
Mission Types
Mission types are used to generally explain what the mission entails and to help match up quirks or skills when dealing with Random Encounters or the overall mission itself. Mission types might also include the sort of enemies you will be facing which, again, will effect you in a positive or negative way.
- (Extermination) Consist of hunting a powerful enemy or wiping out a group of them, either murderous cutthroats or ravenous beasts.
- (Negotiation) Not all missions consist of violent altercations. Sometimes you need to help smooth matters over with other groups.
- (Investigation) A crime scene that needs to be looked over to solve a mystery. Research needs to be performed to find answers to an experiment or to discover lost knowledge.
- (Tracking) People need things found, be it a stolen item or a missing person. Tracking can take some time and requires those with a keen eye for detail and persistence.
- (Escorting) Moving a group of people or transporting an object from one point to another, the path usually littered with danger.
- (Guarding) From standing watch at Briar Glenn to watching over people or resources, providing a constant vigilance is required for such a task.
Mission Levels (Modifiers)- (Rookie)(+2) Beginner mission, can be performed solo relatively easily. Usually consists of guard duty, thief tracking, other menial tasks to help out Briar Glen. Checkpoint Random Encounter occurs at least at 1 page per participating character.
- (Hunter)(+3) Most common of missions. Harder to complete solo but doable. Usually consists of scouting beyond the safe zone, hunting down murderers, culling monsters, escorting civilians (researchers/scholars/priests) to dangerous areas. Checkpoint Random Encounter occurs at least at 3 pages per participating character.
- (Veteran)(+5) Granted access to explore previously forbidden areas. Higher chance of sustaining injury or mental affliction. Consists of clearing monster dens, capturing monsters for experimentation, killing brigand commanders or strong human enemies, raiding enemy outposts. Checkpoint Random Encounter occurs at least at 3 pages per participating character.
- (Hero)(+8) Pushing forward against the darkness. Higher chances of receiving permanent injury or mental affliction. Consists of defeating high level creatures, clearing entire districts, expeditions into the enemy territory, raiding enemy strongholds. Opportunity to obtain Heroic Items and a small chance to obtain Positive Traits. Checkpoint Random Encounter occurs at least at 3 pages per participating character.
- (Legend)(+10) High risk, high reward. There is a chance for your character (or entire party) to die no matter how well prepared you are. Opportunity to take on terrifying Nightmares, to kill faction leaders, or lead mass exterminations. A true chance to remove a bit of evil from the city and shed light unto the darkness. Guaranteed chance to obtain Positive Traits or Legendary Items. Two Checkpoint Random Encounters, one after everyone has posts once and another after at least 4 pages per participating character after first encounter.
- (NIGHTMARE) ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Random Encounters
Congratulations, you have reached the checkpoint of your mission! What's next?
We roll a d20 dice with the board’s random number generator. In general, you want to lower the number as much as possible to prevent deadly encounters and possibly earn more rewards. It can go no higher than 20 and no lower than 1. As you can imagine, a 20 is pretty bad. Using Skills, Traits, and sometimes even Items, you can lower the number. Instead of coming across a horde of zombies led by some eldritch abomination, it's possible to knock it down to stumbling across extra Supplies. Take note that Skills, Traits, or Items can only be used once per mission. That means only 1 skill/trait/item from your list can be used. That’s why it’s advised to work together so you have a better chance of survival. A chart of possible results will be posted per area. “? ? ? ? ?” is noted as something no one has ever encountered before. Don't get your hopes up, it's always a bad sign but it allows us to introduce new monsters or other terrible events! Doesn't that sound great? At the very least, your death will be enlightening to others.
*A note to mobile, as of now the d20 result does not show up on the mobile version. Just switch to desktop mode at the bottom of the screen if you want to take a quick look.

Mission Example
Mission: Recover stolen goods Type: Tracking
Contact: Reynald the Watch Commander Location: Western Bezimen, Fletcher’s Climb Level: Hunter (+3) Rewards: 20 supplies, 5 Secret (each), 300 gold (each) Information: Reynald, a salty old man who looks to have seen his fair share of war, can’t be bothered to track down a group of thieves that made off with some food meant for the orphanage. He has asked for Hunters to track them down and recover the stolen food. Checkpoint: 3/5 pages (each participant)
Completion Pages: 5/5 pages total (each participant).
--------------- Laura and Dismas have decided to take on this request. They setup a thread in Meta Discussion pertaining to their mission. They update each other on when they posted and how many pages they’re at as well as their Sanity and Health. -------------- After initial introductions and the duo writing the story to find the mischievous scoundrels, they must look back at the Meta Discussion thread they set up once they reach 3 pages each. They've reached the Checkpoint. A Storyteller must roll for them. kY_x5m7D1-20 --------------
Luckily it's pretty good! The mission level does add an extra +3, bumping it to 7. According to the location chart for the area, "A terrifying ghoul attacks the party (-2 sanity to all characters)".
Dismas has the Treasure Hunter skill, which gives him a 1 modifier when the initial roll is below 5.
This takes that 7 down to 6! Now the chart says, "Ambushed by bandits! (-2 health distributed between the party)"!
They decide to split it between themselves. But wait! Laura has the trait Quick Feet, which allows her to take 1 less damage. Good for Laura, not so much for Dismas who still takes the 1 hit to his Health. ------------- Now Laura and Dismas head back to their thread and write out the results of their Random Encounter, finishing the mission by taking down the thieves and bringing back the stolen supplies to the orphanage! Not too shabbby. ------------- Laura and Dismas have completed their mission. They inform the staff at the Review Request, providing links to their Mission and their Meta Discussion thread. The Storyteller posts the results of their mission and closes both threads.
