Authority – The power that gives those that are Branded the ability to perform powerful magic or feats of heroics not possible by an average human.
Avarans – Also remarked as citizens or denizens. They are humans that are born in the city. They were born here and have known nothing but the city all their lives. Most Avarans don’t travel outside their districts. What they know of the world outside the great mist wall is taught to them from Outsiders and the Branded.
Branded – Another term used for those that arrive via carriage though often out of malice. They are marked with a glowing brand upon their body. The shape varies from person to person, but the otherworldly glow remains the same.
Hunter – Those who work with Briar Glen, usually those who arrive via carriage and mostly consist of Branded. They are adventurers, explorers, scholars, scientists, and more. Used as either exterminators against the ever growing hordes of monsters, scouts to reach previously unexplored areas, or advisors between rising tensions of human factions.
Outsiders – A term used to describe those who arrive by carriage but don’t carry the brand. They retain most of their knowledge of the past. Like the Branded they range in professions but they retain more skill in craft and other skills that provide auxiliary support. Tailors, blacksmiths, metal workers, teachers, etc.
The Carriage – [This will be reduced to a shorter blurb, will link to lore page] The carriage that arrives every full moon to drop off new passengers and the occasional supplies. The driver is known as "Old Whisper" though his name doesn’t match his cackling demeanor. While generally jovial and willing to share a drink, he will not leave his carriage or answer questions pertaining to himself or where he comes from. Despite his decrepit appearance he cannot be removed from the carriage against his will nor will he allow others to return with him. Many have tried only to never been seen again.
The Emerald Nights– [This will be reduced to a shorter blurb, will link to lore page] Also known as the Shattering, the Catastrophe, and the Reckoning. The Mist has always been a problem with the city, cutting off Avara from the rest of the world. Monsters from the wilderness surrounding Avara have been seen as little more than nuisances and pests. Despite these dangers, order and cohesion was maintained through a united front. However, four years ago that changed when the earth rumbled and the stars were blotted out of the night sky. A green moon shone above and the dead began to rise.
Unimaginable creatures crawled from the bowels of the earth, massive swathes of the city were brought into disarray as buildings crumbled. The ocean swelled, gobbling up the coastline. It was an invasion from outside and within. Many people lost their lives, the city was fractured, and it was three days before the stars returned and the moon was normal once again. While the monsters had dispersed, many still remained hiding in the shadows, hiding from the returning sun. Many sections of the city had descended into factions for survival, few attempting to rebuild and some adjusting to the chaos left behind. The undead became a prevalent problem and the burning of the dead became mandatory for everyone. Soon after the Branded had started to arrive and for three years the city has been in this constant state of disarray and division.
